A solar lead is expensive before anybody has spoken to it. Most solar websites make the arithmetic worse with a contact form. Name, email, phone, a message box, submit. That form tells you somebody's curious. A contact form collects none of this. So the qualifying happens on the phone, at the most expensive moment in the process, using the most expensive resource you have.
And it happens late. The form arrives, somebody notices it, somebody calls back, and by then the homeowner has filled in three other forms on three other sites.
The usual fix is to make the form longer. Add roof type, add a bill range, add a timeline dropdown. It works about as well as you'd expect, because a longer form asks for more and gives back the same thing: a submit button and a promise that somebody will be in touch.
No installer defends the long form. It goes live anyway, and then the reps get blamed for the call quality.

So a solar calculator has one job before it has any other job: produce an estimate the visitor believes. Which means the formula has to be defensible, and the number has to be on the page while they answer, not hidden behind a final submit.
The Six Questions a Solar Savings Calculator Needs
Six questions is enough to produce a credible estimate and a scored lead. Keep them in this order. Cheapest first, contact details last.
Property type and ownership. "Do you own this home?" is the question that pays for the whole page, because a no ends the sale. Put it first, phrase it as part of the estimate ("we need to know who signs off"), and let a rental answer route to something honest rather than to a rep.
Monthly electricity bill. A range picker beats a free-text field. It's the main input into the saving, so the number on screen should visibly react to it.
Roof direction. South, east or west, north, or a mix. Image choice works better than a dropdown here, and it feeds the production estimate directly.
Shading. "How much of the roof is in shade at midday?" None, some, a lot. Three options, and none of them need explaining.
Roof age and material. This is the question that saves a wasted survey. A forty-year-old roof is a re-roof conversation before it's a solar conversation, and the calculator can say so kindly.
Timeline. Next three months, this year, or researching. This one doesn't change the estimate at all, which is exactly why it goes last, next to the email field where the visitor has already decided they want the result.
Leave two things off the list. Don't ask for a full address on the first pass: it reads as intrusive before you've given anything back, and a postcode gets you close enough to a regional production figure. And leave financing appetite alone. It's a good question, and a terrible one to ask a stranger in question four.
Every item on that list earns its place, either by moving the estimate or by deciding whether an appointment can exist at all. Nothing there is asked out of curiosity.
How to Score a Solar Lead So the Calculator Sorts Them for You
Six answers give you a lead you can rank without a human reading it. Then set the bands. Above 80 is a survey. Between 50 and 80 is a real lead with something in the way, usually the roof or the timeline. Below 50 is somebody who should get a useful answer and no phone call.
My own view is that a threshold nobody on the sales team can explain will not survive its first week with the sales team. Write the bands down, put the reasons beside them, and let the reps argue. An argument about where 80 should sit is a productive week. A score nobody trusts gets quietly ignored inside a month.
One mechanical detail that catches people out. When you branch on a score later, inside an automation workflow, the condition takes numbers only. A range typed as "50-80" gets rejected, because text like that doesn't match reliably. Two conditions do it: score greater than or equal to 50, and score less than or equal to 80.
